It was a nice day yesterday so I decided to head towards Westport. From Fairhaven I decided Hathaway road was the best way to get to Dartmouth on this ride. Traffic was light being a weekday around noon. At Route 6 I had to cross the 4 lanes to get to the left turn lane for Chace rd. Once one Chace rd Old County rd is less than 1/2 mile on the right. This is the road that takes you by UMASS Dartmouth. I kept on going to Head of Westport about 2 miles west where Old County rd, Reed rd, Gifford rd and Drift rd meet. I took Drift rd south by beautiful house and estates, farmlands and orchards. This is a great rd for light traffic, scenery and plenty of twists and turns. The speed limit drops to 30 in some places and never tops 40pmh. I was trying to keep it legal but found myself hitting 45 in some spots. There are a few signs marking small rivers and streams and on the east side glimpses of the Westport River can be seen at the foot of some awesome properties.
Along the way at 549 Drift rd is Noquochoke Orchards. They have a website featuring their farm here www.noquochokeorchards.com It's great to buy local produce and this ride will show you some of the local fields and the "Westport- A right to Farm Community" signs will remind you. Dartmouth, Acushnet, Rochester, Middleboro, Carver and Rehobeth are some of the local towns that support this initiative. As you get to Westport Point you'll find a handmaed Right to Fish sign too, which more of an idea than an actual by-law.
get into the
Drift rd continues past Hixbridge rd, another great ride in itself, to cross Route 88, a two lane limited access highway. Then a stop sign comes up at Main rd, Westport. I took a left there to get to Westport Point where the town pier is with lobster and other fishing boats are docked. You'll notice a tiny white clapboard Post Office on the left as you head south and beautifully manicured lawns behind stone wall lined streets offer planty of sights. It's a picture perfect New England small town. This link shows what I'm talking about Westport Point Google images .
After a few minutes at the pier I started heading back by the same route to see whatever I missed. You can head straight north on Main rd to either Hixbridge road east, but check your route this way before hand if you're not familiar with the back roads. Heading past Hixbridge will get you to Old County rd again. It's a right turn at the High School. Heading north past the High School the road changes to Old County rd. and will take you to Route 77, where a right turn will get you back to Route 6 in Westport by the old Lincoln Park.
This is a super nice short trip, I didn't time it but I think it was less than 60 minutes each way. There is only one gas station once you leave Route 6 and that's at 809 Main rd, so plan accordingly. I didn't notice the miles I traveled but it's safe to say it was less than 20 round trip.
